Abstract
In this paper we will present the letters partially written in Basque that José de Viana Eguiluz from Alava, business manager of the Vienna embassy, addressed at the beginning of the s. XVIII to the ambassador in Paris, Joaquin Ignacio de Barrenechea. We will mainly deal with the presentation of the corpus and the importance of this testimony from various aspects, not only because of its uniqueness within the Basque corpus, but above all because of the implications it has for understanding the use of this language by the Court Basques. In this presentation we will try to demonstrate that the writer uses Basque to hide the message from prying eyes: to do so, we will use the clues that Viana himself gives us in his texts. We will also see that in the letters the author switching between Basque and Spanish in an unusual way, both in Basque texts and in general in what we know of alternating languages in bilingual contexts, and we think it is due to another hiding strategy.
