Abstract

Endometriosis is a chronic, common, benign, inflammatory and estrogen dependent gynecological disease in women. In this disease the functionally active endometrial tissue is formed outside the uterus, causing chronic inflammation. The main symptoms are pelvic pain and infertility, which greatly affect the quality of life. Since the use of physiotherapy for the treatment of this disease is often empirical, this systematic review has been made to seek, based on scientific evidence, for treatment options of pain in women diagnosed with endometriosis, as well as physiotherapy treatments and their results. A bibliographic search was conducted in 7 health-related databases with the terms «Endometriosis», «Physical Therapy Modalities» eta «Physical Therapy Specialty». Randomized controlled trials, written in English or Spanish, using methods or techniques of physiotherapy to treat pain diagnosed with endometriosis were searched. The evaluation of the methodological quality was carried out through the PEDro scale. In the end, seven studies were selected, the methodological quality of which was adequate or good; only one was of poor methodological quality. A total of 320 participants were examined and the included physiotherapy methods were Thiele massage, TENS (cutaneous and acupuncture like), electrostimulation of the vagus nerve and acupuncture. All studies determined statistically significant improvements in pain or pain related symptoms. The existing physiotherapy treatments for the treatment of pain symptoms caused by endometriosis have been found to be based on scientific evidence were Thiele massage, TENS (cutaneous and acupuncture like), electrostimulation of the vagus nerve and acupuncture, and could lead to pain reduction.
