Abstract

Universities are considered agents of social change and therefore play an important role in the generation and dissemination of knowledge, research, innovation, economic development and social welfare, showing a constant commitment to sustainable development. Thus, the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), in its «2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development», defines its social, economic and environmental plans and practices. This document is a deep reflection of the 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets, whose end is to promote economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability. At the same time, the UPV/EHU, with the initiative Campus Bizia Lab (CBL), wants to reinforce the aforementioned aspects among the university community (faculty, research staff, services and administration staff, and students). In this work, which is within the CBL initiative, the results obtained under the project «ACTION-REDUCTION. Reinventing classic laws for a more sustainable Campus: actions to reduce consumption and waste» are presented. One of the objectives of this project has been to propose actions to minimize the generation and optimize the management of urban and hazardous waste generated at the Faculty of Engineering of Vitoria-Gasteiz. For this purpose, an exhaustive analysis of the collection, data registration and storage procedures has been carried out, improving the errors and/or inefficient aspects found. In addition, the data related to the last 5 courses has been analyzed, proposing and applying improvement actions or ideas that can contribute to reduce the generation of waste at the Faculty, in order to move towards a more sensitized university community.
