Abstract

In line with the methodology developed in the United Nations’ International Scientific program Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), the project Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in Biscay (EEMBizkaia) has worked with key stakeholders of the territory in the creation of future scenarios for Biscay based on the trend of ecosystem services. In a participatory way, the main direct and indirect drivers of change in Biscay were identified and future scenarios were constructed from the global scenarios developed in the MA. Extracting the most positive elements from the different scenarios developed for Biscay, the target scenario was set “Biscay from local to global and vice versa”. Through participatory work with stakeholders, which has allowed the use of local and specialized knowledge existing in the area, certain lines of action were proposed setting the steps towards that desired future. To achieve the target scenario for Biscay, a participative management that works bearing in mind the links between ecosystem’s health and human well-being is required.
