Abstract
Hydrogels obtained from natural polymers are employed nowadays in a great variety of applications including tissue engineering, drug release, superabsorbent hydrogels in agriculture, chromatographic supports or water treatment among others. Very recently, a new generation of hydrogels designated as `multimembrane´ hydrogels has been developed, in which a gel core is covered by different biopolymer layers. The obtained hydrogels present specific geometries and `core-shell´ morphologies in which the gel core is constituted by polymer layers in the nano and micron range. In this paper different fabrication methods of `multimembrane´ hydrogels obtained from natural polymers are described, as well as representative examples of biomedical applications of this kind of hydrogels
