Abstract

The dairy sheep sector in the Basque Country has been traditionallybased on the use of breed Latxa through pasture based productionsystems linked to the exploitation of local feed resources. However, therehas been a certain intensification of feeding practices during these lastyears, with a reduction of grazing activity. The assessment of the carbonfootprint (CF) of these systems is critical to improve their efficiencyand reduce the emissions associated with livestock. According to theresults the intensification reduces CF of the flocks. Moreover, also theincorporation of regenerative practices reduces CF, which could be aninteresting mitigation alternative to reduce emissions associated withlivestock maintaining their productivity.
