Abstract

As social beings, humans have a basic need to bond with significant others and to belong to a group. Although feeling lonely does not necessarily mean being alone, the feeling of loneliness appears to be more related to the lack of connection with others, so that the physical presence of people who are important to us is not sufficient not to feel lonely; we need to feel connected to them. In this respect, numerous studies suggest that young people are be the group most sensitive to feelings of loneliness, but they also seem to be the group most reactive to intervention and in which the generation of protective factors is most effective not only for the situation of loneliness itself but even for its negative consequences. The article discusses international strategies for addressing youth loneliness and individual, group and community intervention guidelines adopted with a view to responding to the needs generated by this situation, particularly in the case of Great Britain, identifying good practice for a comprehensive approach to the phenomenon.
