Abstract

This paper breaks Industry 4.0 down into nine technologies and analyses whether their adoption -among 271 Basque industrial companies- influences their servitization, as measured by: (1) the development of smart services and (2) service revenues. It also assesses whether the existence of prior digital skills and training initiatives to work with the adopted technologies influences servitization. The results show that the adoption of four technologies increases the likelihood of developing smart services, but only one of them increases the likelihood of earning service revenues. Digital skills and trainings increase the chances of developing smart services, but not of increasing service revenues. As such, the results show a stronger interrelationship between digitalization and the smartization of services than between training + digitalization and the monetization of service
