Resumen
Aim: To examine levels of heroine and cocaine consumption during treatment in a methadone maintenance program (MMP), as well as the factors associated with the use of these substances. Method: A prospective longitudinal study was performed in 376 patients undergoing methadone treatment. The patients' demographic variables, history of addiction and treatment data were recorded. Use of methadone, heroin and cocaine were assessed using twice-weekly urine toxicology screens over a 13-month follow-up. Results and discussion: Moderate use of illicit drugs was found during the methadone treatment. Heroine was used at some time by 72.9%, continuously by 9%, and frequently by 27.4%. Cocaine was consumed at some time by 46.1%, continuously by 10.8%, and frequently by 20.9%. Linear regression analysis revealed cocaine use (β = 0.33) and participation in the MMP (β = 0.10) to be predictive factors of heroin use during methadone maintenance. Similarly, heroin use was the only predictor of cocaine use during MMP (β = 0.33).
