Abstract

Catholic Social Thought (CST) proposes a model for firms that is based on the integral human development of each person and of all persons. In this vision, similarly to the neoclassical thinking, the importance of innovation, creativity and job creation are highlighted. Additionally, CST asks firms to deal with the interests of all stakeholders that interact with the firm, taking care of the environmental sustainability of its own activities. The concept of “economy of communion” is introduced in Caritas in Veritate (CiV) as an example of a business model that is based on CST principles. The economy of communion advices the creation of competitive firms in the market economy, which at the same time are able to integrate the concepts of solidarity, reciprocity and the logic of the gift inside economic activity.
