Resumen

La Unión Europea (UE) y la Asociación de Naciones del Sudeste Asiático (ASEAN) mantienen relaciones de cooperación desde hace más de 40 años. En 2015, ambas organizaciones expresaron su deseo de elevar el diálogo interregional a un nivel más estratégico, extendiéndolo no sólo a cuestiones de interés regional, sino también de dimensión global. Para la ASEAN, el apoyo y la experiencia de la UE resultan especialmente valiosos para encauzar su proceso de integración hacia una Comunidad ASEAN, fuerte y cohesionada, que aspira a consolidar la prosperidad económica y social de sus miembros, así como la estabilidad política en el Este asiático. Para la UE, el compromiso y la cooperación con la ASEAN contribuyen al mismo tiempo a sus propios intereses económicos y de seguridad en Asia, mientras afianza también su presencia y visibilidad en la región. A corto y medio plazo, ambas partes deberán, no obstante, superar sus propias limitaciones internas y las dificultades observadas en la relación mutua, si desean garantizar realmente la sostenibilidad y eficacia de su cooperación y reforzar así el proceso ASEAN y su papel central en la cambiante arquitectura económica y geopolítica de Asia.
