Abstract

This article presents a survey carried out in a set of medium-high and high Spanish firms (most of them from the Basque Country), focused on the analysis of the interplay between open innovation and absorptive capacity. In particular, the influence of innovation openness on innovation performance (both, incremental and radical innovation) is examined. Moreover, the moderating role of absorptive capacity in this relationship is analyzed. The results obtained show that innovation openness has a relevant and positive influence on incremental innovation performance and a negative one on radical innovation success. However, high levels of absorptive capacity involve a stronger and more positive influence of innovation openness on radical innovation success and a lower one on incremental innovation performance.
