Resum

This paper seeks to address the suitability of per capita GDP as an indicator of the sustainability of an economy. We begin by examining the drawbacks of considering per capita GDP as a social welfare indicator, and then go on to focus on its relationship with sustainability. We set out the reasons why it cannot be seen as a measurement of sustainability and analyse the difficulties of making such measurements. We describe the main measurements of sustainability currently in use and conclude by alluding to the recommendations of the International Commission on Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress, which recently examined this matter.
