Abstract

This contribution aims to show the objectives, characteristics and financial sources of “Radio Euzkadi, the Voice of the Basque Resistance” at various stages in its history. In the first section, I will talk about the Basque Resistance and about the first attempts of the Basque Autonomous Government to obtain its own radio broadcast. In the second section, I will focus on the first period of the radio station’s history, extended from 1946 to 1954. During this phase the Basque radio was located in the French territories of the Basque Country and it enjoyed the complicity of the French Government. This was a resistance radio, that was born to struggle against Franco’s regime and to show internationally the harm that it was causing. In the third section, I will address the second period in the history of the radio station, the one from 1957 to 1977, in which Radio Euzkadi broadcasted from a remote place in Venezuela’s jungle. In this case, the Basque radio also had the collusion of the Venezuelan government. It was managed by a Basque nationalist youth group and was funded in part with the funds from the espionage work that some Basque agents carried out in Latin America for the USA Government.
