Sustainable development goals

Abstract

This article analyses the process of the creation of environmentalism in a local context based on an understanding of the social and personal factors involved. We locate this process within the debate around the causes of the environmentalism at a global level, where there are two conflicting positions. The first argues that for environmentalism to develop requires there to be objectively negative conditions in environmental terms, while the second position considers that environmental is born out of the contextual and internal factors of individuals. In the case of Majorca, through the study of the social make-up and the militancy memories of founding members of one of the main environmental organisations in Majorca, the Grup Balear d’Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa(GOB), we translate this global debate to a local context and highlight the importance of social and individual factors in understanding the development of environmentalism.
