Abstract

Grazing affects strongly the structure and functioning of plant communities, not only on thegrowth of aboveground plant organs but also on the growth of belowground biomass (roots). Previousstudies about the root density and grazing show contradictory results. In order to explore the effectof livestock grazing on the vertical distribution of root biomass, soil samples were collected in Augustof 2009 at the experimental area of Oidui, situated in Aralar Natural Park (Gipuzkoa), inside andoutside permanent plots fenced 5 years ago for herbivore exclusion. Results showed that the verticaldistribution of roots differed significantly between grazed and excluded zones, being the densityof roots higher in layer A (0-10cm) of the grazed soil. It is necessary to extent soil sampling androot analysis to the rest of experimental plots for confirming this tendency.
