Abstract

During the archaeological works carried out in the Cathedral of Santa María (Vitoria-Gasteiz), approximately 2,200 burials have been recovered. In the present work we analyze a sample of 358 burials with the aim of defining some demographic and pathological characteristics of the inhumated population in this place. Bone remains have been examined at morphological level, estimating the Minimum Number of Individuals (MNI) and the basic demographic profile (sex and age at death). In addition, a paleopathological analysis has been performed identifying arthropathies such as Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Reactive Arthritis (ReA), Osteoarthritis (OA) and DISH. From these results, more specific studies about different skeletal pathologies can be outlined, which will contribute to know the etiopathogenesis of joint diseases giving a global explanation of the prevalence of diseases in the inhabitants of Vitoria-Gasteiz over time.
