Abstract

This work carries out, on the one hand, a theoretical contribution to the necessary integration between human development and sustainability and, on the other hand, develops a methodological proposal for the implementation of such a theoretical framework in the territory, which is illustrated through a case study. The theoretical approach shows that the integration between human development and strong sustainability contributes to overcoming certain limitations in both fields, and favours greater intra- and inter-generational justice. The proposed methodological Framework is the social multi-criteria evaluation (SMCE), which is applied in a case study addressing a land use conflict arising from a mega-prison construction project. It assesses the impact of ecosystem services on the capabilities of local people under the principle of strong sustainability, exemplifying a territorial assessment that integrates the capability approach, ecosystem services and strong sustainability.
