Abstract

This is a review of the use of the symbolic date of October 25 by different currents of Basque politics, since it was first contemplated, in the mid-19th century, in the work of Ramón Ortiz de Zárate, and above all since Basque nationalism, early in the 20th century, interpreted as dogma the fact that the law passed on this date involved the loss of the Basque people’s secular independence. The mythologisation surrounding this law led to its symbolic derogation by the Constitution of 1978.
