Resumen

Dams are linked to the economic development of a region, but more and more are falling into disuse around the world. Since they are infrastructures that have a significant impact on fluvial ecosystems, their dismantling is a necessary restorative action when their useful life comes to an end. This work shows the environmental state of the fluvial network befare the emptying of the Enobieta dam (Artikutza, Navarra) and the effects of this emptying on the aquatic communities. The chemistry of the water, the size of the substratum, the amount of benthic chlorophyll and the community of macroinvertebrates demonstrated that the dam was the main negative impact on the Artikutza fluvial network. Emptying increased the turbidity of the water, but effects on the quantity of benthic chlorophyll were negligible. This work shows that the dismantling of disused dams is a restorative action required to reduce the environmental impact they generate and that their emptying does not generate significant environmental effects on fluvial communities.
