Abstract
Mutualism constitutes one of the great contemporary associative variables, whereelements such as popular association, solidarity and reciprocity mingle, at a variablescale according to the time or typology. This work approaches the pulse of thisphenomenon, studying the characteristics, functioning, and process of developmentin time, of the friendly societies of Álava, putting them in context, and placingthem in the framework of an international scale model, that of “society of mutualassistance”, whose survival tended to be completely compatible with the advanceof public/state social prevision.
