Abstract
The main question of this paper is under what conditions peaceful multicultural societies are able to develop and which barriers must be crossed in such a development. This question is discussed within a discourse theoretical framework inspired by French philosopher Michel Foucault. According to this framework the world, exposed to the politics of globalization, must be understood as a discursive "swarm" (German: "Gewimmel") that produces the application guidelines for the construction of reality. Thus, the difficulties confronted by multicultural societies are made explicit, and at the same time made visible the possibilities of a solution - which is hardly simple but extremely complex.
