Abstract
Study abroad offers opportunities for students to learn about the practices, beliefs, and values of the target community through reflection on their experience. In our analysis of the narratives of 27 American university students in Madrid, we observed that frequent tensions emerge between the local and the global, as well as between the participants’ identity and the local identity. These tensions cause identitary destabilization that often entails breaking stereotypes about the target culture, although in some cases, preconceptions are reinforced and students regress to a sense of superiority of their own community.
