Abstract
Short-term variability of the dissolved inorganic nutrients has been studied in the Urdaibai estuary in relation to hydrodynamic processes dependent on tidal (spring-neap tides) and riverine changes (freshets), and to biological processes associated with these changes (phytoplankton blooms). River runoff variations due to rainfall pulses determined the short-term changes in nutrient distributions. During the development of a phytoplankton bloom in the upper part of the estuary, a greater consumption of nitrogen was observed, although it was not limiting. In the outer zone, however, phytoplankton growth could have been potentially limited by silicate.
