Abstract
A comparative study on the hydrology of five estuarine systems of the Basque Country has been performed. Using data on their morphology flushing rates, tidal prisms and stratification coefficients have been calculated. lt can be observed the different influence of each one of these factors in studied systems. The lower water residence times have been found in the estuary of Deba. However, no clear trends have been observed in the other estuaries because above mentioned factors can demonstrate opposite effects, as in the case of the estuary of Mundaka. Taken into account different zones, the higher exchange rates generally occur in the middle part of the estuaries, except in Mundaka, where the higher exchanges occur in the lower part due to the high value of the tidal prism.
