Abstract

In this work, changes in the dissolved nutrient concentration (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) along the Gernika estuary during two 6-d periods of high atmospheric instability have been evaluated (in Autumn and Winter). Rainfall pulses determined variations in the Oka river runoff values, whose discharge at the same time control the circulation pattern of the estuarine waters and short-term variations in the dissolved nutrients. Over brief periods (6 days) nutrient concentrations can increase or fall by a factor of 10 or more, depending on the intensity of the river discharge.
