Abstract

Play is a key aspect for the child’s development. However, play is understood and encouraged in many different ways at Early Childhood Education centres. Given this situation, the aim of this work is to describe how children play in classrooms, on the one hand; and to describe the possibilities and context of play for children, on the other. To this end, an interpretative paradigm and a case study have been proposed: all children and teachers between the ages of two and six in one ECE have been considered. The play described in this case has its own characteristics according to the cognitive, social and motor dimensions; as well as to the use of time, space and materials. All of these features and uses have been explained in relation to a given context and teacher´s interventions, and some key areas for future improvement have been identified.
