Abstract
Despite the growing awareness by academics and professionals that past knowledge offers a great potential in relation to innovation, the existing research in this field is insufficient to truly understand the importance of past knowledge for businesses and about how they can take advantage of it. Thus, this article aims at providing a synthesis of the main factors involved in innovation based on family business tradition. Having this purpose in mind, we develop an in-depth review of both literature on the characteristics of family businesses and of innovation based on tradition in the specific context where these companies carry out their activity.
