Abstract

This article analyses the conflict that happened in Bilbao in 1903, when catholic forces and anticlerical sectors were confronted in a serious public order conflict. It is framed within the religious mobilisations that took place in the city from 1880 onwards, as well as within the political changes that happened at the beginning of the century because of the simultaneous emergence of political Catholicism and republicanism. On one side, traditionalists and nationalists took part in the conflict, with socialists on the other side. The tensions were shaped as a fight for public space, which adopted a violent and multitudinous form.
