Abstract

This article analyses the advertisements appeared in the press of Bilbao between 1856 and 1900. The messages transmitted are taken into consideration in order to trace a general overview of the origins of advertising in the Basque Country. Two periods are distinguished – before and after the Last Carlist War. In the first period, advertising is basically oriented towards the wealthy bourgeoisie. After 1876, when the industrial boom happens, the number of advertisements rapidly increases; they are oriented towards the middle class.
