Abstract

In this work a high urethane rich catiomeric polyurethane (PU) copolymer is studied as encapsulating agent of model drugs (FM) by salting-out the PU into a high ionic strength solution at a pH < pI of the catiomeric PU. The encapsulating efficiency, E, for different FMs was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy and a semi-empirical model is proposed to predict the observed efficiency distributions as function of FM molar volume and charge. The model parameters were determined by linearization of the model E as function of FM charge density (z/Vmol) and by the linear fit of the experimental E vs. z/Vmol. Although with some deviations the model describes the general tendency of E as function of molar volume and charge of the FM. The encapsulation of fluorescein has been confirmed by epifluorescence microscopy and its release kinetics as function of time and pH has been determined.
