Abstract

The objective of this work was the study of the structure and productivity of mountain pastures in the Gorbea Área in Bizkaia during 1994 and 1995. The study was conducted in four pilot áreas: Altunoste and Arkaola, resown and low level pastures (650 masl) and Algorta and Usotegieta, pastures with spontaneous vegetation of higher altitude (800-1285 masl). The most abundant species were related with soil characteristics through ecological profiles. Pasture yield was estimated using exclusión cages. Soil pH was the property most important for the maintenance of sown species and the soil P and K content was the factor which explains best the dominance of spontaneous species. Resown pasture produce twice as much (5900 kg DM/ha/year) as the áreas with spontaneous species (2400 kg DM(ha/year).
