Abstract

In 2016, the authors carried out a Landscape Action Plan (PAP) that was subsidized by the Basque Government and the city of Astigarraga (Gipuzkoa). The PAP are recently created tools (2014) aimed at the protection, management and planning of the landscape at the local level. The PAP of Santiagomendi‐Landarbaso included an analysis and very detailed diagnosis and some workshops and activities for citizen participation. In the end, and starting from a battery of improvement goals, a series of action proposals for the landscape were set up. One of them referred to the sector of Santiagomendi‐Landarbaso. It is a territory with two large and distinct units; on the one hand, Santiagomendi, with the typical countryside landscape predominantly consisting of relatively quality agrarian production. On the other hand, Landarbaso, a large property in private hands where there is a biogeographic diversity along with certainly remarkable heritage values the City Council of Astigarraga wants to evaluate with a view to possible purchase and inclusion within the Natural Park of Peñas de Aia protected territory. The LANBIOEVA (Landscape Biogeographical Evaluation) methodology is being applied for this purpose. This methodology has a tradition of more than 25 years and has been applied in very different territories: Iberian Peninsula, Finland, Norway, Slovenia, Croatia, Monte Negro, Patagonia, Morocco, Brazil... Its implementation in the special plan has given very interesting results for units such as the Atlantic mixed forests and the riverside woods.
