Abstract

In the case of psychiatric disorder, developing imaging techniques enables objective and impartial investigation of subjects "in vivo" us optimal to find the root cause tools. Our particular focus will be in early stages of psychosis since no confounding due to medication or other causes associated with chronicity. The aim was to study the effects of age of onset, diagnosis and awareness of disease in brain gray matter. 69 healthy controls and 101 patients with a First Episode of Psychosis underwent an MRI scan in the first weeks of inclusion in the PAFIP program. At 6 months of inclusion an independent psychiatrist confirmed diagnosis using the SCID-I. To analyze the data we used spm5 and DARTEL, an isotropic Gaussion kernel of 5 mm FWHM was used for smoothing. Age, gender and total intracraneal volume were covariates of no interest in the ANCOVA contrast. We found that reductions in gray matter volume were more pronounced in patients with early onset age, patients with schizophrenia and patients with poor insight.
