Abstract

This article explores the relationship between leisure and lifelong learning (LLL), focusing on its benefits for older people. Firstly, statistical data is presented on the elderly, at world level, in Europe and in Spain, to help us to visualise and understand the specific weight of this population group. The relatively new situation described has led experts to develop a concept of ageing that is closely linked to the level of physical and mental activity and the active participation of elderly people in their environment. Secondly, an approach to leisure is outlined, based on the importance of this phenomenon in society and life generally nowadays, understanding leisure as a human right and a personal experience; in short, an essential element in integral human development. Finally, the role of leisure among older people is discussed within the context of lifelong learning, with the aim of helping senior citizens to achieve better quality of life, to continue developing their potential and to enjoy high levels of psychological and social well-being.
