Polymers are product-by-process materials whose microstructure and hence their final properties are mostly determined in the reactor. Therefore, the understanding of the processes occurring in the reactor is crucial to achieve, an efficient, consistent safe and environmentally-friendly production of polymer materials with improved performance. Sponsored by the Industrial Liaison Program, bilateral contracts and strong support from public funding, the research is focused on the fundamental understanding of industrially relevant polymerization processes with special emphasis on polymerization in dispersed media. Development of high performance functional waterborne polymer dispersions, substitution of oil-based polymers by biobased or/and biodegradable polymers, control of the morphology of nanocomposite waterborne polymers, and finding solutions for the film formation paradox are some of the current research lines.
