Résumé

Obesity has become a pandemic in developed countries. In Spain, more than 23 million people are classed as overweight and it is predicted that by 2030 some 3.1 million new cases will be categorised. This research seeks to reveal how the media cover this issue. To this end, the news from six online Spanish newspapers published in 2020 and 2021 has been collated based on three keywords: obesity, childhood obesity and overweight (n=2,760). For a more detailed analysis, we selected the news in which obesity was the main topic in 2021 (n= 385). Content analysis was used to determine the media’s issues (themes) and framing. The results reveal a change in strategy in these media: obesity is viewed more from a social perspective than an individual one. In other words, the stigmatisation of the obese has ceased; instead, governments, the educational system or the food industry are made responsible for the obesogenic. The coincidence of this study with the pandemic and the subsequent year made it possible to obtain genuine results; it could be argued that the confinement contributed to a social perspective of obesity in the media. Despite the fact that the references to women are rare and, when they do occur, they are related to an aesthetic vision, it can be concluded that online newspapers are assuming a role in proposing solutions against the problem of obesity.
