Resum

This communication deals with some of the results obtained by AZTI from the application of Finite Elements codes for the numerical study of plumes produced by waste spills of aquaculture stations. The use of numerical models to simulate the physical reality facilitates a new approach to the study of the impacts caused by fish culture exploitation, making easier the analysis of site selection and optimising the necessary resources for operative monitoring plans. Nevertheless, the numerical model is only a complement to in situº measurements, which allow for the calibration and reliability of the models. All these data must be put on expert hands to allow sustainable management of the aquaculture sector.
