Resum

The intensification of the livestock farms and the division between livestock and agricultureactivities have created environmental impacts, such as the increase of N and P concentrations inwaters. In pastures of the province of Gipuzkoa different potential risk to discharge N to watercourses were theoretically estimated and 407 farms were identified as representing the majorrisk of these losses of N (Del Hierro et al., 2007). In this study, 105 dairy farms of them wereselected and soil organic matter, total N and P contents were determined in the pastures (2060ha) managed by these farms. The most of the area analyzed presented high contents of P in soil(more than 10 % of organic matter in 41 % of the area; more than 0.49 % of total N in 42 % ofthe area; more than 50 ppm of P in 43 % of the area) and, assuming a fertilization based onpasture P requirements, a surplus of 300000 m3 of slurry was estimated in the 105 farms. Thetheoretically estimated risks to discharge N to water courses (Del Hierro et al., 2007) were notwell correlated, field by field, with the organic matter, total N and P contents determined in soil, but 104 dairy farms presented problems in the management of P as well.
