Resum

We examined the relationship among interparental conflict, family interactions and emotional impact on children. A cross-over design was used in interviewing a sample of 655 young people (374 girls and 281 boys, ranging from 11 to 17 years of age). The battery of questionnaires used to evaluate the variables of interest was comprised of: Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict (CPIC), Child's Report of Parental Behaviour Inventory (CRPBI) and Youth Self Report (YSR). To explore the relationship among variables we used correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression models to assess the variables predicting the emotional impact on children. We found significant correlations among the variables of interest, with effect sizes from 0.30 to 0.46. Our hierarchical model explained 33% of the variance, this proportion being accounted for by perception of conflict (semipartial correlation rs-p = 0.33) and mother's hostility (rs-p = 0.19). Our results allow us to confirm our hypothesis, as children's perception of higher interparental conflict and mother's hostility towards their children were significantly associated with children's emotional distress
