Zusammenfassung

During Spain’s Transition to Democracy, Valencian regionalism and Navarrese provincialism emerged as mass movements. Each combined the defence of Spanish unity at any cost with strong anti-Catalanist and anti-Basquist discourses. Adopting a comparative perspective, this paper studies both phenomena and seeks historical explanations for them. To this end, it analyses the sociolinguistic situations, the correlation of forces, the constitutional methods for recognizing self-government, the role of the press, and the impact of politically motivated violence in Valencia and Navarre.
