Resum

This paper analyzes the culture and creative sector in the Basque Autonomous Community in order to understand their role in the Basque economy, their evolution during the past eight years and their spatial distribution, based on Eustat data. Our analysis shows that culture and creative industries represent 5.7% of total Basque firms, a percentage that is greater than that of the State and similar to Cataluña. Besides, the share of this sector has remained relatively stable during the recession, which reflects the dynamism of the sector. Regarding their spatial distribution, culture industries agglomerate in urban areas and some counties that have a long cultural tradition. The reasons for this localization pattern seems to be due to demand side factors, i.e. proximity to consumers, and supply side factors, i.e., the endowment of creative infrastructures, the existence of related firms and the diversity that characterize cities.
