Résumé

Little research has explored differences in motivational variables and music self-concept among conservatory students in Spain. The aim of this study was to analyse the differences related to age and gender of conservatory students in the multiple dimensions of self-concept, attributions and traitanxiety. The variables were measured by the Music Self-concept Questionnaire (CAMU), the Multidimensional Self-concept Questionnaire (AUDIM), the Causal Attribution Scale based on Weiner’s (1974) bidimensional model, and the State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI). The participant group was comprised of 1126 students from professional and advanced conservatories located in different autonomous regions of Spain. The results showed significant differences in most of the variables both for different age groups and gender, highlighting adolescence as a critical period for general self-concept as well as unfavourable differences for women both in trait-anxiety and the less adaptive causal attributions. However, the results did not show the same tendency in various dimensions of music self-concept, and in these cases, music self-concept could possibly be protecting the general self-concept in adolescents and women. The findings of this study broaden our knowledge of conservatory students and highlight the importance of professional training and development among conservatory teachers.
