Résumé
The aim of this text is to analyse the purge process carried out by the municipal authorities of the City Council of Bilbao and the physical violence applied by the Francoist military courts to the personnel of the township’s Fire Brigade. Both forms of violence served to punish personnel considered hostile to the positions of the coup’s perpetrators by means of dismissal or prison. Moreover, they were also designed to create a new City Council, with personnel who would be loyal to the new regime and submissive to the new authorities. To this end it was necessary to determine the composition of the Fire Brigade, the politico-social affiliation of its members and their participation in the Civil War, both on the front line and in the rearguard. In spite of the fact that all the municipal employees of the City Council were subjected to the purge process, it particularly affected the Fire Brigade, largely due to the specific characteristics of its personnel
