Zusammenfassung
For the past three decades, feminist anthropology in the Basque Country has been researching the causes of the inequality which affects women in economic, political, social and symbolic spheres. Until very recently, local festivals – considered to be arenas outside everyday time and space - were not treated as an object of analysis from a gender systems perspective. We propose to apply this perspective, which enables us to relate structural aspects with human agency, to the specific case of the Alardes of Irun and Hondarribia, in an attempt to demonstrate its importance for a more in depth analysis of the difficulties for the progression towards a more just and egalitarian society.
