Resumo

This paper analyses two of the highest grossing fi lms of the sixties, considering popular cinema as a cultural product with large capacity to actively infl uence in the creation of exemplary references and in the construction of identities. The fi lms The arrival of an angel (Ha llegado un ángel, 1961) and The city is not for me (La ciudad no es para mí, 1966) were among the most successful of the decade. Both fi lms showed stories focusing on the contrast between the values associated with rural and moral principles underlying the regime, and those related to urban life and consumption models. The following pages will discuss the meaning of the apparent dichotomy between country and city presented in the fi lms, which had strong gender connotations.
