Zusammenfassung

Driven by the industrialisation process of the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, Bilbao became a centre for finance and services and assumed its role as the seat of government for the urban agglomeration that extended to the Abra. The modern city also confirmed its character of port city thanks to its tradition, the intense development of business associated with its port and the influence it had on local government and the urban structure. During this period, the institutional port was part of urban planning and management and conditioned the city's growth and expansion. It also affected the distribution of its ground space and how it was used and its appearance and landscape. This leads to an analysis of the relationship between the Junta de Obras del Puerto de Bilbao (Works Board of the Port of Bilbao) and other local institutions, as well as the dynamic between them in the decision-taking processes that affected the city.
