Estudio longitudinal sobre el consumo de cannabis en primeros episodios de psicosis

Numerous studies show the existence of a high prevalence of cannabis use among patients with psychosis. However, the differences between cannabis users and non-users regarding symptomatology and cognitive functioning are still unclear. The aim of the study was to establish the clinic and cognitive characteristics of the groups users and non-users in a sample of patients with first episode of psychosis. Special attention was paid to the differences between men and women and the impact that the age of onset of the cannabis use could have. Within this main objective was to find out if the differences were maintained after three years of evolution of the disease. It was observed that cannabis users debuted earlier with the disease than non-users. In the group of men, consumption was related to worse evolution of symptoms. Processing speed was the cognitive domain most affected by consumption in all groups. Finally, there were no differences between users who started cannabis use before the age of 16 and the rest of the patients.
